Last week, 11 Indian cleaners won $1.2 million in a lottery. To do this, they bought a single ticket, pooling their money.
According to the Press Trust of India news agency, the 11 women earned so little before they won that some of them had to borrow money to buy a lottery coupon. Its value was 3 dollars. Two of the winners invested 15 cents each and the other nine invested 30 cents each.
One of the women said: «We had already bought lottery tickets by collecting money. But this is the first time we managed to win a mega prize.
In their main job, the women remove non-biodegradable waste from homes in Parappanangadi, a city in the state of Kerala, in southern India. They usually earn about 3 dollars a day, with additional benefits from the sale of collected garbage. Their income does not allow them to support their families, so they have to take out loans to pay for their children’s education.
After taxes, the winners will receive about $765,000, which will be divided among them. Two of them will receive one tenth of $76,500. The other nine women will share the remaining amount equally.
All of them plan to continue in their positions. One of them shared some comments: “We have the cleanest municipality in Malappuram. We will continue working to maintain this status. “The only thing we want now is for other people here to win the lottery.”
